Around this time, Japan was able to renegotiate the unequal treaties it had signed with the Western powers decades earlier. Japanese efforts toward achieving equality with the West, though sometimes futile and excessive, as represented in the Rokumeikan Era, started to achieve success in the mid-1890s, particularly after Japan’s victory over the Chinese in 1895.
